Dear HEiKA enthusiasts,
After using the time since the beginning of August to recharge our batteries, we are back from the summer break with a short newsletter before the start of the winter semester.
We hope you had a great summer too and look forward to seeing you soon in Karlsruhe, Heidelberg or somewhere in between.
>> HEiKA STAR
We are very pleased about the great interest in our new funding programme HEiKA Strategic Areas of Research (HEiKA-STAR) and grateful for the numerous letters of intent to submit applications that we received on 16 September.
The HEiKA-STAR funding programme aims to strengthen sustainable research collaborations between KIT and the Uni HD. The focus is on the funding of new joint research areas that will establish long-term links between the two partner universities. The call for proposals is specifically aimed at consortia that will jointly apply for major funding from national or international institutions such as the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), or the European Union (EU).
The selection of the HEiKA-STAR consortia that will be funded is in November.
NEXT STEPS:
- October 21, 2024: Submission deadline
- November 5, 2024: Selection meeting of HEiKA Strategic Board in Karlsruhe (save the date)
- January 1, 2025: Start of funding for HEiKA Strategic Areas of Research
Student Innovation Lab

In the Student Innovation Lab students can develop their idea into a real-world product and get hands-on support from experts.
It bridges the gap between academic studies and practical start-up experience. Specialized labs enable the participants to develop and test prototypes. Simultaneously it teaches entrepreneurial skills to transform ideas and prototypes into scalable and disruptive businesses.
The program consists of lectures and modules on entrepreneurial skills, continuous exchange opportunities with the hei_INNOVATION team and experts in the field, as well as a practical seminar.
The Student Innovation Lab is open to Bachelor's students from the third semester onwards and Master's students of all semesters.
Falling Walls Lab Baden-Württemberg
On July 10, eleven scientists presented their research-based innovations in 3-minute pitches on the Falling Walls Lab stage in Stuttgart.
The jury was very impressed by the high quality of the presentations and, after an in-depth discussion, selected the following as winners:
-
1st prize: Julius M. Kernbach, University Hospital Heidelberg
for his breakthrough in the fight against invisible brain cancer -
2nd prize: Andra-Lisa M. Hoyt, University of Konstanz
for her breakthrough in the remineralization of stones to preserve cultural heritage -
3rd prize: Kian van der Enden, Delft University
for his breakthrough in scalable quantum networks -
Audience Award: Tiffany Cheng, University of Stuttgart
for her breakthrough in bio-inspired buildings
The first place winner Julius Kernbach as well as the second place winner Andra Hoyt will have the chance to represent Baden-Württemberg at the Falling Walls Foundation Science Summit in Berlin in November.

Philosophising together

Series of events in Heidelberg and Karlsruhe (in German)
What distinguishes mere opinions from well-founded knowledge? What are the characteristics of consistent argumentation? And how can we have constructive discussions with people who think differently? Philosophy provides us with methods to structure our own thinking more clearly and to make our discussions more constructively.
Do you sometimes ask yourself philosophical questions? Here is an opportunity to discuss them with others: KIT and Heidelberg University invite you to philosophise together. Everyone is welcome!
From October to December 2024 at the Karlstorbahnhof in Heidelberg
Further information (in German)...
From January to April 2025 at the Kulturküche in Karlsruhe
