Early detection of tumors via bioactive small molecules presents a critical need and a significant challenge.
The HEiKA Project pursues an innovative solution that combines molecular research with advanced two-photon polymerization techniques to develop a cost-effective, fluorescence-based assay.

This project deals with the topic of abusive head trauma (AHT) in children in the first two years of life. The vision is to develop an adaptive model based on machine learning methods to help determine the cause of injury in AHT cases.

Every year, two thirds of primary energy is released to the environment as waste heat. The re-utilization of the enormous amount of waste heat by means of conversion into electricity is of great significance to fight against climate change. Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are gaining significant interest in academia and industry. This project aims to develop printed composite TE films with low interface resistance.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide and the primary cause of cancer-related deaths in Germany. Resistance to therapy likely occurs owing to a small population of cancer cells with stem cell properties, appearing as a relevant cell target for therapy.
The project goal is the development of a therapy preventing the reappearance of stem cells.

...with 3D-printed zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) implants!
By using 3D printing, highly individualized, root-like implants can be produced from ZrO2. These innovations not only improve the healing and long-term stability of the implants, but also make them more cost-effective.

The 2021 funded HEiKA project of Lizeth Sloot and Thorsten Stein is still successfully collaborating on how rollator support affects sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit movements. The findings are now published in Nature Science.

Empowering Entrepreneurship
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Heidelberg University collaborate via HEiKA to expand KIT’s successful teaching format "Student Innovation Lab" (SIL). The project aims to strengthen entrepreneurial thinking in STEM programs and promote the transfer between university and industry. With HEiKA, the innovative teaching approach is extended to a national network level, creating expected synergies in topics, qualifications, business partners, and teams.

... with Printed Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensors
In response to the critical challenges posed by resource scarcity, food production demands, and climate change resilience, the project "Printed Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensors for Smart Agriculture" brings together a dynamic team led by Dr. Markus Köhli from the Physikalisches Institut at Heidelberg University and Prof. Dr. Gerardo Hernández Sosa from the Lichttechnisches Institut at KIT.

Pioneering Communication Research in Medicine
A collaborative effort led by Jürgen Hesser (Universitätsmedizin Mannheim) and Ines Langemeyer (IBAP, KIT) is breaking new ground with the "Living Lab for Studying the Effect of Communication in Medicine". Aiming to explore how cutting-edge technology is reshaping patient-physician communication through a unique serious game approach.
