In the past decade significant progress has been made increasing the power conversion efficiencies of organic photovoltaic devices. Despite this progress, research investigating the fundamental causes and mechanisms of the environmental instability of organic electronic materials and devices has been limited in quantity and scope. Such mechanistic understanding would clearly aid the integration of organic electronic materials into industrial applications, guiding both material and device engineering strategies to improve lifetimes.

Herein, we propose to investigate the physics of degradation mechanisms of organic materials in photovoltaic devices by a unique approach combining precise control over degradation, transient absorption and photothermal deflection spectroscopy measurements to investigate the nature of degradation products in the materials and their precise effects on the photophysical material properties which lead to performance deterioration.
